Time is everything in Switzerland. And one has to live here to know how much the Swiss value this aspect of life. But their behavior is less surprising when you consider that Switzerland is home to the craft of watchmaking.
A brief history of Swiss watchmaking
John Calvin, one of the founding fathers of the Reformation movement, wanted to make Geneva a puritan city. Hence in 1541, he banned jewelry of any kind. The talented craftsmen had to find another occupation and they turned to watchmaking.
So in the early 17th century, the world's first Watchmaker's Guild was formed. Soon, Geneva became crowded and many craftsmen moved to the lower Jura mountain regions. Over time, this region has become home to many of today's well-known brands such as Omega, Tag Heuer, Tissot, Zenith, and others.
