Let me start with a quick synopsis of Wolkenbruch's Wondrous Journey into the Arms of a Shiksa: Mordechai "Motti" Wolkenbruch is a young orthodox Jew in Zürich. Naturally, his eyes are set on Laura, a good-looking fellow student. But with Laura being a non-Jewish woman, a shiksa, it is an uphill battle for Motti to gain the approval of his mother.
In sharp contrast, all the marriage candidates his resolute mother arranges and approves of happening to also resemble her... Assailed with doubts, Motti starts to think: is his predefined path of a Jewish orthodox marriage really the right thing for him?

Stars
The chemistry between Swiss actors Joel Basman and Noémie Schmidt is just phenomenal and helps to turn slapstick scenes into convincing moments of romance and love.
Some other actors, such as Sunnyi Melles (as a dying rich lady), Inge Maux (as the mother) and Udo Samel (as Motti's father) are cliché roles, but still highly entertaining characters. We were happy to spot our very own Anina Mutter stars one of the supporting roles!
Style
Swiss director, Michael Steiner, is one of the few local filmmakers who understands the combination of story, sound, vision - and comedy. His adaptation of the novel "Wolkenbruch's Wondrous Journey into the Arms of a Shiksa" by Thomas Meyer is a wonderful example of a contemporary Swiss romantic comedy made for a broad audience.
Cinemani Vote: Wolkenbruch's Wondrous Journey into the Arms of a Shiksa (2018)
The Yiddish version of the Leonard Cohen song "Halleluja" rests in good memory. Also, lots of Zürich locations can easily be set spotted by taking another close look at the just released Blu-ray of this Swiss blockbuster: Bahnhof Wiedikon, Escher-Wyss-Platz, the men's bath (Männerbadi) or the Im Viadukt.
Wolkenbruch is now available on Blue-ray and in various VOD stores.
