A "room with a view" has a different meaning depending on where you are in Switzerland. In Zermatt it is the Matterhorn, in Montreux the pristine Lake Geneva, and in Bern the UNESCO protected old town. When it comes to Grindelwald, the "view" can only mean one thing: The Eiger north face.
Eiger Selfness Hotel in Grindelwald
On my recent trip to the Jungfrau Region, I had the opportunity to stay at the quintessential "room with a view". The Eiger Selfness Hotel in Grindelwald is situated in the center of town, offering unobstructed views of this massive slob of limestone.
The term "selfness" in the hotel's name caught my attention right away. Their philosophy is based on the idea to offer guests various ways of winding down. Be it with a visit to the in-house spa, by taking a yoga class, or by indulging in the healthy breakfast options including local breads and dairy.
As you can tell, the "selfness" concept is quite unique, adding more value to a stay which is already spectacular.
The hotel's staff is exceptionally friendly and fun to interact with. It is the small details that make my stay memorable, such as the special health drink at breakfast or the inspirational quotes in the bar.
When wandering around the hotel, I particularly liked the authentic vibe of Barry's. The in-house restaurant was built using materials from an old Alpine hut.
My Room with a view at the Eiger Selfness Hotel
Due to my last minute reservation, I stayed the night in a "Basic" room. There is really nothing wrong with this room type as it has a renovated bathroom with tub, a tiled entrance area and a south facing balcony with uninterrupted Eiger views.
It is just that some small details such as the lack of WiFi (wired internet only) and an oldish carpet did not exactly fit the otherwise positive picture.
(The hotel also offers newly refurbished "Lifestyle" rooms on the third floor and up.)
Given that Grindelwald is a top tourism destination with lots of bookings during any season, the Eiger Selfness Hotel is a really good deal for comfortable lodging. It sits in a top notch location, has a huge spa area with saunas and whirlpools, a rich breakfast buffet until 11 AM and most importantly, some of the best hospitality in Switzerland.
To judge this hotel by its rather smallish flaws would not be doing it justice: The Eiger Selfness Hotel is doing everything right to offer their guests a rejuvenating stay in the Bernese Alps.
