Dimitri BurkhardOk, I have to confess that this post is somewhat of a cheat. No, the picture is not photoshopped (or is it?) and the company "Gold To Go" actually exists! However, the gold vending machine is actually a German invention and should not be featured on a blog about Switzerland...
The concept is simple: 1. Deposit money 2. Retrieve gold! It works just like a regular vending machine, except that it is über-bolted to the floor and that the selling prices are dynamically adjusted based on the day's market price for gold.
According to the company's website, they are mainly targeting locations in airports for now, but they have ambitious plans to expand their franchising concept to countries other than Austria, Germany and Switzerland.
So, how about an unbelievable post on April Fool's which turns out to be true? Let us know in the comments how you feel about investing in gold, and whether you would use such a vending machine if it were available in your neighborhood supermarket...
I’d totally buy some for myself & as gifts! Although, I’m not sure TSA & CBP would love to see that going to/from Switzerland with the strict banking regulations btwn CH & US.
There’s now one in the Bern airport according to their website.
