Holy Bimbam – Swiss Idioms Explained

Holy Bimbam Book

To understand a culture, get to know their idioms. But this is easier said than done, especially when that language is Swiss German.

A group of young booksellers-to-be has literally translated dozens of typical Swiss proverbs into English. And let me tell you: The result is full the hammer! Some of the proverbs included in Holy Bimbam are so out there, they require an explanation from a native speaker.

Or do you have a faint clue what the following even means?

Other idioms contain just enough information to gain a vague understanding, such as Are you not quite baked? If you are into linguistics or are trying to understand your Swiss coworkers, this crowdfunded book is a perfect companion.

But beware: The more you get to know them, the more you may find that you don’t have the hey on the same stage

For me, this book is really awesome because it is a trip down Memory Lane. While I know most of the idioms, I have not heard some of them since my childhood.

It is really fun for anyone to try and guess the meaning of these idioms, each of which is available both in English and in Swiss German. It borders on a wonder that nobody has thought of this idea before…

Holy Bimbam is a smart little gift for those who are nostalgic about Swiss idioms, or for those who are trying to get into the Swiss psyche.
